Whale Shark, Christmas Rock, SA

Data was collected from this Whale Shark Rhincodon typus (March 2007) which had washed ashore at Christmas Rock, west of East London (SA). This was a second record in a decade of such a species in the same region of coast. Colleague Greg Brett is seen with the shark just prior to measurements being taken for the record.

This is the largest living fish species and is a filter feeder which can attain a length of up to 12 meters.
