Rock Art with Victor Biggs

Mr Victor Biggs, a rock art expert (particularly with the works of the San in the Eastern Cape), kindly accepted an invitation by the East London Museum and Siyabulela Javu to visit sites in the Tsomo River area of the Eastern Cape (6th October 2011).  Traversing rough and ready roads a party of enthusiasts began a steep descent by foot to a site situated at one of the numerous bends of the Tsomo River. Here beautiful animal paintings were noted, especially an adult elephant and a baboon. Mr. Biggs was extemely happy to discover ‘power lines’ painted on the sandstone walls (more of this interpretation at a later date).

The eroded topography of the Tsomo River and its associated deeply incised valleys will reveal more stories depicted on the walls of the Beaufort sandstones – we look forward to discovering them …
