A Risso’s Dolphin calf wash out

Sadly the museum had to investigate and record a report of a Risso’s Dolphin Grampus griseus which had washed out close to Glen Muir (north of EL, SA). The animal was determined to be a calf of a species which frequent the southern oceans of Africa. The adult Risso’s Dolphin has a total length of 4 m and can weigh up to 500 kg. The dolphin pictured below had a total length of 1.3 m.

The mean group size of these animals is 10-30 (varies regionally), but solitary individuals and pairs also occur. Their diet consists of octopus, squid and krill taken in continental shelf areas and mostly at night. Gestation 13-14 months with a lifespan of at leaast 30 years.
