Tortoise translocation

A permitted private tortoise rehabilitation post in Kidd’s Beach recently saw a clutch of young tortoises hatch which surpised the owner. A plan was made with the East London Museum to translocate the young animals to a safe nature reserve in the region. 13 Leopard Tortoise Stigmochelys pardalis hatchlings were carefully collected and driven to a site on a private reserve and released. The site was  located after adult tortoises were released in the area previously. Good grass and water nearby soon had the hatchlings scurrying off and in a short time they had disappeared into their new ‘home’.
